My Amazing Journeys to Antarctica by Dave Pinion : Presentations of experiences from my small ship expedition cruises to the coldest and most remote place on Earth.
In February/March 2023, inspired by the exploits of Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton and other legends from the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration, I visited Antarctica on a small ship expedition. I was hoping, with luck, to stand in their footsteps. I was VERY lucky and now I stand on their shoulders. I saw everything I had hoped for, and experienced far more than I expected, I fell in love with Antarctica. I caught the "polar bug", a well known and incurable disease I now share with my fellow travellers from five expeditions to the white continent (so far!!). Beware!!
On returning home from that first expedition I just had to share my experiences so I made a presentation of the trip. This was well received locally so I decided to broaden my audience and at the same help preserve the historic sites of Antarctica which I had enjoyed so much, by donating my fees to the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT, a charity based in Cambridge), which maintains the Historic Buildings, such as the Penguin Post Office at Port Lockroy.
I have two presentations available, about 45-60mins:
"My AMAZING Journey to Antarctica" is from my first expedition on which we sailed 7000 miles from New Zealand to Argentina via the Ross Sea. We visited Snares and Campbell islands, the crossed the (very) stormy Southern Ocean to the Ross Sea and the base huts of Scott and Shackleton on Ross Island, the McMurdo Dry Valleys and the Ross Ice Shelf, before sailing (a very long way) to Horsehoe and Porquoi Pas Islands, Crystal Sound, Port Charcot and other locations on the Antarctic Peninsula and finally Deception Island in the South Shetlands
"In the Wake of Shackleton", is based on my subsequent Antarctica trips to South Georgia and the Weddell Sea, and the (mis)adventures of the Shackleton Endurance Expedition. We follow the path of "The Boss" on his ship Endurance via wonderful South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and deep into the Weddell Sea to Berkner Island. Our ship Ortelius set a new furthest south world record before returning northwards to visit Elephant Island and make a rare landing at Point Wild.
Both presentations feature amazing photos taken during the voyages (mostly by generous fellow traveller friends) plus a few anecdotes and (hopefully) my love and enthusiasm for all things Antarctic.
